INDONESIA'S PERTAMINA DISCOVERS NEW OIL WELL IN SUMATRA

07/01/2026 12:19 PM

JAKARTA, Jan 7 (Bernama) -- State-owned energy company Pertamina has announced the discovery of a new oil well with a potential output of up to 3,442 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) at Adera Field, its oil and gas operational area located in South Sumatra, Indonesia.

According to a press release, the discovery by PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Adera Field resulted from the integration of 3D Abab seismic data acquired in 2023, stemming from studies conducted by the Geology, Geophysics, Reservoir, and Production team at PEP Adera Field.

Pertamina EP Zone 4 General Manager Djudjuwanto said that through more detailed seismic data analysis, the team was able to map the direction and distribution of the reservoir layers more accurately, thereby increasing the likelihood of drilling success.

“Well ABB-143 (U1) (the new well) is expected to contribute additional daily production of around 458 BOPD under certain operating conditions with an estimated total oil recovery or Estimated Ultimate Recovery (EUR) of about 750,000 barrels based on comparisons with a reference well,” he was quoted in the statement.

He said the new well discovery would provide a boost for PEP Adera Field in increasing oil and gas production in 2026 and supports the government’s target of reaching an oil output of 1 million BOPD.

Pertamina noted that a two-hour test had been carried out on Dec 30, and the well had demonstrated a production capability of 3,442 BOPD.

“The two-hour test is considered more representative of stable flow conditions. The initial flow test was carried out to determine the well’s maximum deliverability or its ability to produce oil naturally,” he added.

Meanwhile, Pertamina Vice President for Corporate Communication Muhammad Baron said Pertamina is committed to accelerating national energy self-sufficiency in line with the government’s Asta Cita agenda by prioritising key programmes in the upstream oil and gas sector.

“Pertamina is allocating significant capital expenditure in the upstream sector to encourage massive and innovative drilling, which will have a significant impact on discoveries and the increase of national oil and gas production,” he said.
