GREENPEACE CRITICISES PRIVATE JET TRAVEL TO DAVOS SUMMIT

15/01/2026 01:17 PM

GENEVA, Jan 15 (Bernama-dpa) -- The number of private jet flights to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos has risen, according to an analysis by Greenpeace, highlighting the climate impact of the wealthy travelling to the annual gathering, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

Greenpeace compared private flight movements at the seven airports around Davos during WEF weeks in 2024 and 2025 with those in average weeks. It found 709 additional private flights in 2025, a 13 per cent increase from 628 in 2024 and up significantly from 227 in 2023.

Greenpeace spokeswoman Lena Donat said that while the WEF seeks solutions to global problems, the rich and powerful are fuelling the climate crisis with luxury emissions. She urged an immediate ban on highly polluting private flights where low-emission alternatives are being ignored.

Greenpeace said private flights produce roughly 10 times the greenhouse gases per passenger as commercial flights and about fifty times more than train travel. Most flights to Davos originated in France (20 per cent), followed by the United Kingdom (13 per cent) and Germany (12 per cent).

About 70 per cent of the flights could have been completed by train within a day.

The WEF begins on Monday in the Swiss ski resort town of Davos, with around 3,000 political and business leaders expected, including US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
