WASHINGTON, Jan 23 (Bernama-dpa) -- Millions of Americans are bracing for what could be one of the biggest winter storms in the United States (US) in years, the country’s National Weather Service and media warned on Thursday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
More than 120 million US residents – or more than one-third of the entire population – could be affected this weekend, according to ABC News.
The storm could pass through more than 3,000 kilometres of the country, The Washington Post reported.
Storm and snow are expected for the southern states, parts of the Midwest and the East Coast, where it is expected to hit on Sunday, including in the New York metropolitan area and the US capital, Washington.
The National Weather Service warned on Thursday of icy roads and dangerous travel conditions.
The combination of snowfall and wind could severely reduce visibility on roads, it said. Trees could topple, and power outages were also possible.
The national forecasters also warned of hypothermia and frostbite, and recommended that residents protect pets from the cold. Strong winds would make the perceived temperature feel even colder, it added.
In the southern state of Texas, state emergency management was activated to help respond to incidents, Governor Greg Abbott announced. This helps with increased monitoring of the power supply or assistance in clearing roads in an emergency.
