SECOND AFRICAN SWINE FEVER CASE DETECTED IN SOUTH KOREA

23/01/2026 11:57 PM

SEOUL, Jan 23 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- South Korea on Friday confirmed its second case of African swine fever (ASF) this year, prompting authorities to cull thousands of pigs, Yonhap News Agency reported.

The latest case was confirmed at a pig farm in Anseong, about 65 kilometres south of Seoul, less than a week after an outbreak was detected in Gangwon Province last Saturday, officials said.

Authorities culled a total of 2,600 pigs at the farm as a preventive measure and issued a 48-hour standstill order in Anseong and neighbouring cities and counties, including Pyeongtaek and Yongin.

Prime Minister Kim Min Seok ordered emergency containment measures, including restricting access to the site and carrying out culling operations, after receiving a report on the new case.

Kim also stressed the need for a thorough epidemiological investigation to determine the cause of the outbreak.

ASF is deadly to pigs, though it does not affect humans. There is currently no vaccine or cure for the disease.
