PHNOM PENH Feb 6 (Bernama) -- Cambodia is inviting Malaysian hospital operators to help expand affordable, accessible and high-quality healthcare services in the kingdom, as part of efforts to strengthen inclusive healthcare nationwide.

Ministry of Health State Secretary Sung Vinntak said the participation of private enterprises would mobilise greater resources, spur innovation and improve healthcare delivery across the country.

“The Ministry of Health looks forward to further cooperation with Malaysia to strengthen our national health system.

“This includes support in the areas such as health system governance, hospital management, specialised clinical services, health workforce development, digital health, and public-private partnership,” Vinntak said in his special remarks at the Malaysia Healthcare Week Phnom Penh 2026 on Thursday evening.

The event was organised by the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) in collaboration with the Embassy of Malaysia in Cambodia.

Speaking at the event, MHTC Chief Executive Officer Suriaghandhi Suppiah said Cambodia is a particularly important partner in the region in terms of medical tourism.

Based on year-to-date figures up to September 2025, the volume of healthcare travellers increased by 81 per cent, rising from just over 4,400 to nearly 8,000 compared with the same period last year.

From a revenue perspective for Malaysia, healthcare travel receipts rose by more than 228 per cent, reflecting strong demand for high-value treatment in Malaysia.

"These figures clearly point to a sustained upward trend in outbound healthcare travel from Cambodia, with patients looking for affordable, high-quality care.

“We are seeing growing demands driven by greater health awareness, rising expectations for specialised care and the need for trusted healthcare options abroad.

“The strong growth between our two countries reflects the newfound confidence Cambodian patients place in Malaysia's healthcare system,” said Suriaghandhi.

The National Heart Institute (IJN), Subang Jaya Medical Centre, Sunway Medical Centre Penang, MSU Medical Centre, Mahkota Medical Centre, Optimax Eye Specialist Centre, IHH Healthcare Malaysia, Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Prince Court Medical Centre joined the event in Phnom Penh.
