SÃO PAULO, Feb 12 (Bernama-dpa) -- Police in Brazil have arrested a pilot on suspicion of child abuse shortly before his plane was due to take off, the German Press Agency (dpa) reported, citing local media.

The 60-year-old was detained as he was preparing for his flight to Rio de Janeiro at Congonhas airport in São Paulo, news portal G1 reported on Wednesday.

The man is said to have run a network for at least eight years in which minors were sexually abused and the assaults recorded.

According to the report, the suspect admitted knowing the abused girls, but denied the offences.

A court ordered that he be held in custody for 30 days.

A 55-year-old woman was also arrested during the police operation. The state news agency Agencia Brasil reported that she is suspected of having given her granddaughters, aged between 10 and 14, to the network.
