MILAN, Feb 12 (Bernama-dpa) -- Jordan Stolz of the United States set an Olympic record on his way to claim speed skating gold in the men's 1,000 metre race on Wednesday, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.
Stolz, who also holds the world record, clocked 1 minute 06.28 seconds, beating the previous mark of 1:07.18 minutes to claim his maiden Olympic medal.
Dutchman Jenning de Boo, who raced alongside Stolz as the 14th pair, was 0.5 seconds behind and had to settle for silver. Ning Zhongyan of China claimed bronze.
The trio had to patiently wait for the confirmation of their medals after world champion Joep Wennemars of the Netherlands was granted a re-skate due to being obstructed in his pairing.
But he could not skate fast enough to join the top three and finished fifth.
The women's 1,000m was won by Jutta Leerdam of the Netherlands on Monday.
