JAKARTA, Feb 13 (Bernama) -- A Brazilian national was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment by the Denpasar District Court after being found guilty of bringing in three kilograms of cocaine into the Indonesian island of Bali.
The verdict against Yuri Bezerra Da Costa, 25, was delivered by Judge Ni Made Okti Mandiani, on Thursday.
"The court sentences defendant Yuri Bezerra Da Costa to 18 years in prison, minus all time served in detention," she said, according to ANTARA News Agency.
The defendant was also fined Rp1 billion (US$57,000) with 190 days’ imprisonment in default of payment.
The judge ruled that Da Costa was legally proven guilty of committing a narcotics offence under Article 610 Paragraph (2) letter a of Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1 of 2026 on Criminal Adjustments, as stated in the first alternative charge.
During a search by customs officers at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport on July 13, 2025, Da Costa was found carrying black plastic packages which, upon examination, were confirmed to contain cocaine weighing 1,564.92 and 1,524.44 grams net respectively.
He reportedly transported the drugs from Rio de Janeiro to Dubai on an Emirates Airlines, before continuing on the same airline to Denpasar.
