VETERAN DIPLOMAT SALIM HASHIM PASSES AWAY AT 76

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- Former Malaysian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK), Australia, Singapore and Brunei, Datuk Salim Hashim, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 76.

His nephew, Datuk Dr Hishamshah Mohd Ibrahim, in a Facebook post said the veteran diplomat passed away earlier this morning at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Hospital in Serdang, Selangor.

Salim was laid to rest at the Muslim cemetery in Precinct 20, Putrajaya, before 4.35 pm following funeral prayers.

The Foreign Ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, in a post on social media, extended its condolences to his family.

“Condolences to the family of the late Datuk Haji Salim Haji Hashim from everyone at Wisma Putra. May Allah shower His mercy upon the soul of the late Salim Haji Hashim and place him among the faithful,” the ministry said.

Salim, who joined the Foreign Ministry as an assistant secretary in 1973, had an extensive and distinguished career in the diplomatic service.  

He served as High Commissioner to Brunei from 1994 to 1997, followed by his posting to Singapore from 1997 to 2001.

He subsequently served as High Commissioner to the UK from 2001 to 2002 and later to Australia from 2005 to 2007.

Born in Segamat, Johor, Salim is remembered for his dedication and contributions to Malaysia’s diplomatic service.
