MEXICO CITY, Feb 25 (Bernama-dpa) -- Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has given a security guarantee for fans at the World Cup in light of the recent wave of violence after the death of a powerful drug lord, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.
"There is no risk to visitors. Not the slightest risk," she said at her daily press conference on Tuesday when asked if the games could be held in Mexico in June and July as planned. "All guarantees are in place."
Mexico is co-hosting the expanded men's football tournament with the United States and Canada.
Following the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes or "El Mencho" on Sunday by the Mexican military, fighters from the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) put up roadblocks in several Mexican states, set cars on fire and attacked shops.
Seventy-four people were killed in the army raid and subsequent fighting.
A total of 13 matches will be played in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.
At the end of March, two international play-off matches will also be held in Guadalajara and Monterrey to determine the last two World Cup participants.
