MEXICO CITY, Feb 25 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) — The Mexican government has dispatched a second shipment of humanitarian aid to Cuba, said the Foreign Ministry, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
"Following President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo's orders, the Secretariat of the Navy has sent a new cargo of humanitarian aid operated by the Mexican Navy to the Republic of Cuba," the ministry said late on Tuesday.
The Papaloapan and Huasteco vessels sailed from Veracruz on Tuesday carrying 1,193 tonnes of food for Cubans, the statement read.
Papaloapan holds 1,078 tonnes of beans and milk powder, while Huasteco has 92 tonnes of beans and 23 tonnes of assorted foods donated by public groups with Mexico City government backing, marking the first haul from the capital's historic-centre collection point. It is expected that the sea delivery will take about four days.
Mexico sent over 800 tonnes of food and essentials to Cuba via two Navy ships on Feb 8. The ministry highlighted Mexico's longstanding solidarity with Latin American nations such as Cuba, including past aid for disasters such as California and Chile wildfires, as well as Texas floods.
On Jan 29, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order authorising the United States to impose tariffs on imports from countries that supply oil to Cuba and declared a state of emergency, citing an alleged threat to US national security posed by Cuba.
