5.7-MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE HITS LEBONG IN INDONESIA’S SUMATRA

JAKARTA, March 8 (Bernama) -- A magnitude 5.7 earthquake hit Lebong Regency in Bengkulu province on Indonesia’s Sumatra island late Saturday night, with tremors felt across several nearby areas.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the quake was recorded at 11.58pm local time on Saturday, with its epicentre located on land about 64 kilometres west of Lebong.

The agency said the quake occurred at coordinates of 2.99 degrees South Latitude and 101.63 degrees East Longitude, at a depth of 47 kilometres.

It said the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami but advised residents to remain cautious of possible aftershocks.
