GENEVA, March 10 (Bernama-dpa) -- The escalating conflict in West Asia and its impact on public health are of great concern, World Health Organisation (WHO) head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Monday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
"Damage to petroleum facilities in Iran risks contaminating food, water and air – hazards that can have severe health impacts, especially on children, older people, and people with pre-existing medical conditions," Tedros posted on the social media platform X.
"Rain laden with oil has been reported falling in parts of the country," he added.
Turning to Lebanon, he said that nine health workers have been killed and 16 injured since February 28, when the United States (US) and Israeli raids on Iran began.
In addition, 43 primary health care centres and five hospitals have been closed by evacuation orders, he said.
"I urge all parties to de-escalate and prevent further risks to people’s health, impacts on health facilities and workers, and a further expansion of the conflict across the region. Peace is always the best medicine," the WHO head concluded.
