KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- Terengganu Hockey Team (THT) made history by securing their second Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) treble at the National Hockey Stadium 2, tonight.

THT completed the treble after defeating Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) 3-0 via a penalty shootout in the final, wresting all three MHL titles from last season’s treble winners, TNB.

Both THT and TNB were tied 1-1 in regular time.

THT had already secured this year’s Charity Shield by beating TNB 2-1 and went unbeaten in nine matches to clinch the league title, repeating their 2023 treble triumph.

In tonight’s match, TNB’s South Korean import Jang Jong Hyun converted a penalty corner in the third minute to put the defending champions ahead, in front of nearly 2,000 spectators.

However, the East Coast team under the tutelage of Mohd Hafizi Baharom managed to level the score through Muhammad Arif Syafie Ishak’s penalty corner in the 18th minute.

The winner had to be decided by a penalty shootout after both teams failed to find the net in the second half despite creating numerous chances.

In the shootout, siblings Faizal and Fitri Saari, along with Syarman Mat Tee all found the back of the net, while TNB’s Nik Muhammad Aiman Nik Rozemi, Wan Haziq Hishamuddin Wan Ameer Ruzman and Norsyafiq Sumantri were unable to beat experienced goalkeeper Muhammad Hafizuddin Othman.

Faizal also won the top scorer honour with 23 goals in 12 matches.

THT advanced to the final after edging Matador 1-0, while TNB defeated Maybank 7-4 in the semi-finals on Thursday.

Earlier, Maybank defeated Matador 2-1 to finish third.

Meanwhile, PDRM Blue Warriors also completed a treble in the women’s category after beating Malaysian University 3-2 via a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw to clinch the Vivian May Soars Cup.
