KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 (Bernama) – The Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA), in partnership with Etiqa General Takaful Bhd (EGTB), launched the ‘Rahmat Ramadan: Supporting the Homeless’ initiative last night, offering sahur (pre-dawn) meals to the city’s homeless in a display of community solidarity.
MTA chief executive officer Mohd Radzuan Mohamed said the programme marked a significant step in expanding the reach of the ‘Social Takaful Fund,’ which seeks to assist a broader segment of underprivileged individuals through contributions from the takaful community.
“During this blessed month of Ramadan, we aim to support those who need it most. But it’s not just about providing food, it’s a gesture of solidarity and a reminder of the social responsibility that the takaful industry upholds,” he told Bernama at the event.
Around 100 meal packages were distributed to the homeless in the Chow Kit area, with 20 volunteers from MTA and EGTB lending their time and efforts.
The event also saw the participation of Head of eChannel at EGTB Helmi Rahim and Pertubuhan Kebajikan Al-Riqab Kuala Lumpur chairman Akmar Ali.
Mohd Radzuan further emphasised that takaful is not merely a tool for financial protection but also an avenue for charitable giving, helping those in need.
As of 2023, the total corporate zakat paid by takaful operators amounts to about RM50 million, a portion of which has been allocated to various welfare initiatives benefiting eligible asnaf (recipients). This amount is expected to increase in 2024.
“Through the contributions of takaful participants, we not only provide financial protection but also support those facing hardship, in line with the mutual cooperation principles of takaful,” he added.
Looking ahead, he said MTA plans to continue its Rahmat Ramadan programme with other charitable initiatives, including breaking fast with gig economy workers and supporting various welfare organisations.
