SAN JOSE (California, United States), March 28  (BERNAMA-dpa) -- Google has agreed to supply AI software to US defence contractor Lockheed Martin, underscoring the shift in the tech giant's stance on military applications of artificial intelligence, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

The generative AI technology will be used for tasks such as analysing reconnaissance data, aiding decision-making, software development, and optimising technical designs, Lockheed said in a statement on Thursday.

Lockheed plans to integrate Google's AI into its "AI Factory ecosystem," enhancing its existing software capabilities. Google’s cloud division will also provide a platform for managing AI functions, the defence contractor announced.

Lockheed Martin’s portfolio includes fighter jets, helicopters, missile systems, and radar systems.

The move comes despite Google’s previous commitment, made in 2018, to refrain from providing AI for weapons systems. That pledge followed internal protests over the company’s involvement in a US military drone programme.

Google’s current AI principles now state that the company seeks to align its technology with "widely accepted principles of international law and human rights."
