IPOH, April 25 (Bernama) -- The newly upgraded terminal building of  Sultan Azlan Shah Airport (LTSAS)  is now larger and equipped with more efficient, comfortable facilities, increasing its passenger handling capacity to  700,000 passengers a year, compared to 500,000 previously.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) Managing Director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the upgrade involved expanding the terminal building, improving the check-in and arrival areas, and enhancing immigration facilities for a smoother passenger experience.

“In addition, LTSAS is now equipped with upgraded security infrastructure such as Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) monitoring and scanning machines,” he said when speaking at the LTSAS Improvement and Upgrading Ceremony here today.

The ceremony,  officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, was also attended by Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming and Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

The RM8 million project is part of MAHB's ongoing commitment to enhancing aviation facilities nationwide, ensuring greater comfort, safety, and convenience for passengers in the years to come.

Mohd Izani said each enhancement was guided by a comprehensive strategy encompassing infrastructure engineering and passenger flow management, aimed at supporting the objectives of the National Transport Policy and aligning with the national development goals outlined under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP).

Meanwhile, MAHB in a statement said LTSAS officially completed its optimisation project, a comprehensive initiative aimed at enhancing the airport’s functionality, capacity and overall comfort.

It said one of the key enhancements at LTSAS is the expanded terminal space, which has increased by over 10 per cent, from 2,927 square metres to 3,257 square metres, effectively doubled the airport’s peak-hour passenger handling capacity from 240 to 510 passengers per hour.

“Supporting this increase, every holding lounge has been significantly enlarged from 71 square metres to 270 square metres, with new seating installed to accommodate up to 80 per cent of peak-hour demand.

“On the departure side, immigration counters have been increased from two to four, with infrastructure in place to support the addition of two autogates in future.

“Meanwhile, for arriving passengers, the number of counters has been upgraded from four to six, also with provisions for two future autogates,” it said.

According to the statement, passenger amenities have been significantly improved with the upgraded washrooms besides the number of security screening machines increased from two to five to enhance processing efficiency and minimise queuing time.

LTSAS presently handles daily flight services by AirAsia to Johor Bahru and by Scoot to Singapore.
