KUCHING, March 19 (Bernama) -- New South Wales (NSW), one of Australia’s leading states in the energy sector, has expressed interest in strengthening its relationship with Sarawak in the areas of renewable energy and environmental sustainability.
This was disclosed by NSW Senior Trade Commissioner Andrew James Parker during his courtesy call on Sarawak Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, on Tuesday.
According to a statement by Dr Hazland’s office today, the meeting underscored the potential for collaboration in the field of green energy and sustainability, highlighting the strengths of both regions in driving forward a greener, more sustainable future.
Parker said NSW could bring cutting-edge technological expertise and significant experience in harnessing renewable resources, such as solar, wind and hydroelectric power for which Sarawak is known for having the vast natural resources required.
“We recognise Sarawak's immense potential in renewable energy, particularly in hydropower, and we see great opportunities for collaboration. New South Wales, with its advanced capabilities in green technologies, is eager to partner with Sarawak in advancing sustainable energy initiatives,” he said.
Echoing Parker’s sentiment, Dr Hazland said Sarawak's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning to a low-carbon economy aligns seamlessly with NSW’s vision of fostering innovation in clean energy solutions.
He said the state boasts substantial untapped potential in hydropower, solar energy and biomass, positioning itself as a key player in the ASEAN region’s energy transition, as well as developing its energy resources in line with global sustainability goals.
Both parties discussed about opportunities for joint ventures, investments and research partnerships in the green energy sector, including the development of large-scale projects, exchange of expertise and the promotion of technology innovation.
“This meeting marks an important step towards building stronger ties between New South Wales and Sarawak, particularly in the realm of green energy, where the two regions can combine their respective strengths,” the statement added.
