GYEONGJU (South Korea), Oct 31 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord between Thailand and Cambodia is a poignant reminder that peace must never be taken for granted, while reminding the APEC economies on what is still happening in Gaza and Ukraine.

Fresh from the 47th ASEAN Summit, he reinforced in his belief that dialogue and cooperation at regional levels are not just useful, but essential.

"The Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord between Thailand and Cambodia is a reminder that peace and prosperity will not last without trust, patience and continued negotiations. The same principle must be upheld in the context of Gaza and Ukraine that a solution based on dialogue, not violence, is the only path to genuine peace.

"APEC has proven to be a pioneer in driving the spirit of openness, assuming moral responsibility and introducing global economic norms based on voluntary cooperation, not coercion.

"The same is true of prosperity; both must be nurtured and sustained through dialogue and trust," he said during Malaysia's intervention at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Dialogue with Guests here today.

Malaysia has been instrumental in brokering the peace accord between the two ASEAN members, which was also recognised and gained continuous praise from the United States and ASEAN member states.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump, who was in Gyeongju, continued his praises on Malaysia's   successful leadership role, which led to the landmark signing of the Cambodia-Thailand peace deal last week.

In his special address at the APEC CEO Business Forum, Trump said that with the help of Malaysia, the peace deal was successfully signed between the two countries at the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings held in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

“And after about two days, we ended up with the help of Malaysia. Malaysia was like a mediator. We used beautiful facilities in Malaysia,” describing the situation of the conflict as "too hot with bullets flying all over the place".

"Malaysia was fantastic and they helped in implementing it (the signing). The prime minister was a great, great guy. Just left him... within two days, we signed the deal. The two people (Thailand and Cambodia) came in, they were like best friends. It was a beautiful thing to see, we save probably millions of lives," said Trump.

The peace deal which is known as the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord was signed in Kuala Lumpur by Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, which then saw Trump and Anwar signed as witnesses.
