KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- TRX City Sdn Bhd aims to nurture global talent within Malaysia’s premier financial hub through its collaboration with Monash University Malaysia to develop a new campus at the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX).
Chief executive officer Datuk Azmar Talib said the partnership represents a strategic alignment between education and industry that would reinforce TRX’s position as a world-class international financial centre.
“Monash’s presence supports TRX’s vision of becoming a world-class international financial centre,” he told Bernama in an interview recently.
TRX City Sdn Bhd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Ministry of Finance and the master developer of the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX), the country’s dedicated international financial district in Kuala Lumpur.
Under the partnership with Monash University Malaysia, TRX City will design, build and finance the construction of a bespoke campus on a 2.02-hectare site within TRX North, encompassing about 1.6 million square feet of academic space and student accommodation, bringing the total built-up area to nearly two million square feet.
Monash University Malaysia will lease the campus for an initial 30-year term, with construction expected to commence next year and completed between 2031 and 2032.
Azmar said Monash University Malaysia’s flagship business, law and information technology faculties will complement TRX City’s ecosystem, which currently hosts more than 30,000 knowledge workers and global financial institutions.
He highlighted that as an international financial centre, TRX City is expected to develop the necessary talent pool to support global institutions establishing their presence within the district, and the availability of such talent is a key factor influencing investment and location decisions.
Azmar also emphasised that TRX City’s development strategy remains focused on long-term sustainability and value creation.
“Our mandate is to create catalytic community value, strong social value as well as commercial value because we need to be self-sustained,” he said.
Originating from Australia, Monash University established its first foreign campus in Malaysia in 1998, starting with 417 students.
The university had initially shared a campus with Sunway College. Today, Monash University Malaysia is the institution’s third-largest campus, with more than 11,000 students from more than 80 countries.
Set to open in 2032, the new Monash University Malaysia campus in TRX will accommodate up to 22,500 students and 1,700 staff by 2040.
