KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 (Bernama) -- The government has approved the renewal of Lynas Malaysia’s operating licence for 10 years, effective tomorrow, following technical assessments, verification of legal compliance, consideration of national strategic interests, and commitments given by the company.
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said that the approval was granted by the Atomic Energy Department under the Atomic Energy Act 1984 (Act 304).
“The approval was given with a clear stance. There will be no new construction of permanent disposal facilities (PDF) in the future for Water Leach Purification (WLP) residues exceeding control limits under Act 304.
“After the first five-year period, the production of radioactive residues must cease entirely, and any radioactive residues generated during that period must be neutralised through thorium extraction or other approved treatment methods to levels below 1 becquerel (Bq) per gramme,” he told a press conference at the Parliament today.
He said the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry remains committed to ensuring that the domestic rare earth element industry operates safely, responsibly and in full compliance with established safety standards.
“This commitment is supported by continuous monitoring through the Environmental Radiation Monitoring System, which monitors and detects any increase in radiation readings in real time.
“The data enhances the government’s preparedness, enabling early action to mitigate radiological risks to the public and the environment. It also ensures that safety is monitored based on verified local data, without relying on foreign sources,” he said.
