KANGAR, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- A lecturer at a skills institute in Perlis pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here today to a charge of causing injury to a male student at the institute last February.

Syed Luqman Syed Muhammad Arif, 27, was charged with causing injury to Muhammad Qairil Mohammad Zahid, 22, at the institute’s security post in Beseri, Padang Besar, at 9.45 pm on Feb 22.

The charge was framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum imprisonment of one year or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

Earlier, Perlis contingent police headquarters prosecuting officer ASP Norliza Abdullah, who appeared for the prosecution, offered the accused a bail of RM3,000 in two local sureties.

Lawyer Zuhair Ahmad Zakuan, representing Syed Luqman, appealed for a lower bail on the grounds that his client was supporting a pregnant wife expecting their first child, as well as his parents.

Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim allowed the accused bail of RM1,500 in one surety and fixed Nov 18 for mention.
