KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- A full report and investigation into the case of a University of Malaya (UM) student who died after falling from a residential college building this evening is being conducted by the authorities, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
In a post on Facebook, Zambry said the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) and UM would provide immediate assistance to the victim's family.
"At the moment, we are still waiting for an official statement from the police before the KPT issues any further statement," he said, expressing his condolences to the student's family.
Zambry said that upon receiving news of the incident, he rushed to the University of Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM).
Meanwhile, UM in a statement today announced that the student involved in the incident died while receiving treatment at PPUM.
According to the statement, the cause of the incident is still under investigation by the authorities, and UM is currently providing full cooperation to assist in the investigation.
UM also asked all parties to respect the privacy of the student's family and not to speculate or share any unverified information regarding the incident.
"All UM staff express their deep sadness and sympathy to the deceased's family, and the Student Affairs Department is channelling assistance and providing full support to the deceased's family," according to the statement.
Meanwhile, an autopsy on the student will be conducted tonight at PPUM’s Pathology Department.
Petaling Jaya district police chief,ACP Shamsudin Mamat said his team confirmed the incident involving the 22-year-old male student at about 3.15 pm.
"The victim was confirmed dead while receiving treatment at PPUM at 4.25 pm. The police are still conducting investigations at the scene of the incident, and any further developments will be communicated from time to time," he said in a statement today.
