KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 (Bernama) -- The Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Education Department (JPWPKL) will carry out an internal investigation to review compliance with standard operating procedures (SOP) in organising a water confidence programme, following the death of an 11-year-old schoolboy yesterday.

In a statement today, JPWPKL said the case is being probed by the police and assured that it will provide full cooperation in the ongoing investigation.

“JPWPKL extends its condolences to the family of the student who drowned during a recent programme. Initial support and assistance have been provided to the family,” the statement read.

According to the department, a team of counsellors and guidance teachers has been mobilised to provide psychosocial support to students, teachers and all school staff involved.

The 11-year-old boy, a student at a primary school in Kuala Lumpur, died yesterday, after receiving two days of treatment following a drowning incident during a water confidence support programme at the Desa Tasik Sports Complex Swimming Pool, Sungai Besi, here last Wednesday.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said they received a report on the incident involving the student from the Integrated Special Education Programme (PPKI) on the same day it occurred.
