HOME MINISTER URGES PDRM TO USE AI TO BOOST TRAFFIC, ENFORCEMENT EFFICIENCY

SEPANG, Nov 13 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has been urged to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) technology to boost the efficiency and accuracy of its operations, particularly in managing traffic data and road safety,  Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said.

Speaking at the launch of the Fourth Special PDRM Dialogue 2025 here today, he said AI applications could help the police process and analyse information quickly and precisely, including identifying outstanding traffic summonses and compounds, which currently total RM6 billion.

“I have stressed that we should not inherit outdated records. RM6 billion...since when? Some offenders may have even passed away.

“Using AI applications, we can process the data quickly and match it with the National Registration Department’s death records. This will give us more accurate and clear data,” he said.

Also present was Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail.

Saifuddin Nasution said the move was urgent to ensure enforcement actions do not rely on outdated or irrelevant information, while also enhancing the effectiveness of the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT).

He described AI as a technological revolution capable of strengthening national safety, administration, and enforcement systems, akin to the revolutions sparked by gunpowder and the printing press in history.

“Gunpowder triggered a power revolution, the printing press sparked a knowledge revolution, and now AI is bringing a new revolution that we can master without perfect English proficiency,” he said.

On another matter, Saifuddin Nasution said an initial report on the recent migrant boat tragedy in the Malaysia-Thailand border waters would be presented at the Cabinet meeting tomorrow.

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim requested the briefing following the incident, which claimed 25 lives as of yesterday.

“This is a tragedy that I have to present in tomorrow’s Cabinet meeting. The Prime Minister asked me to do this because it involves organised crime, human trafficking, and other serious issues,” he said.

He said the incident on Nov 6, involving about 300 migrants whose boat sank near Pulau Tarutao in waters close to the Malaysia-Thailand border, has drawn both local and international media attention.
