MELAKA, Dec 12 (Bernama) -- A total of 14 compounds amounting to RM14,400 were issued to 14 vehicles for various violations during two Motor Vehicle operations in Melaka, held over five days from Dec 8 to mark World Ozone Day 2025.
State Environment Department (DOE) director Rosli Mustafa said six of the compounds were issued under the Environmental Quality (Control of Emissions from Diesel Engines) Regulations 1996, each amounting to RM2,000.
An additional eight compounds were issued under the Environmental Quality (Motor Vehicle Noise) Regulations 1987, each with a fine of RM300.
"Three prohibition orders were issued under Section 48A of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 against three vehicles with smoke density readings exceeding 70 per cent or emitting excessive black smoke.
"These vehicles are not allowed to operate on the roads until repaired and re-inspected," Rosli said in a statement today.
In addition, 19 vehicles were ordered to undergo testing. Of these, 11 had smoke density readings above 70 per cent, and eight had excessively noisy engines.
A total of 286 vehicles were inspected during the operation, involving the police (PDRM), Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ), the National Anti-Drug Agency, JPJ Highway Enforcement Unit , the South Zone 1 Highway Patrol, and PLUS Expressways. resulting in 36 enforcement actions.
Rosli also noted that two workshops providing maintenance services for cooling and air-conditioning systems were inspected under the Environmental Quality (Refrigerant Management) Regulations 2020. Two Fleet Operator premises and one vehicle rest station were also checked under the Environmental Quality (Diesel Engine Emission Control) Regulations 1996 and the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005.
“Following these inspections, one Fleet Operator premises and the vehicle rest station were issued with notices under Sections 31 and 37, while a compound was also issued under the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005," he added.
