PONTIAN, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- Two fishermen were rescued after their boat sank about 2.9 nautical miles northeast of Tanjung Piai early this morning,

Johor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) acting director Captain Maritime Kama Azri Kamil said the Johor Bahru Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) received an emergency call at 6 am.

“PERKASA 42 boat was immediately dispatched to monitor the situation and conduct follow-up operations,” he said in a statement today.

He said the incident happened around 5 am when waves hit the back of the boat, capsizing it. Both fishermen clung to the vessel and called for help before being rescued by fishermen from Kampung Pok Jetty.

Kama Azri said the two men, aged 57 and 47, were taken to Forest City Jetty and found fit, while their boat was hauled ashore.

Kama Azri thanked the local fishing community for their quick rescue and stressed the need for close cooperation with enforcement agencies to ensure safety.

He also urged fishermen to monitor the weather, keep boats seaworthy, and carry proper safety and communication gear before going to sea.

“The MMEA is committed to strengthening maritime safety and urges the community to report any incidents at sea immediately via the 999-emergency line of the nearest Maritime Operations Office for swift action,” he added.
