TANGKAK, Feb 5 (Bernama) -- The Johor Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued 2,136 notices from Jan 1 till yesterday (Feb 4) through its planned enforcement initiative on commercial vehicles dubbed "Op Khas, Op Gempur Kenderaan Perdagangan”.

Its director, Zulkarnain Yasin, said the notices were issued following the inspection of 12,510 vehicles in the state.

He said technical offences, such as registration numbers not following specifications, not wearing seat belts and using unsuitable lights were the most common offences committed, with 555 cases recorded.

"Other offences included not having a competent driving licence (CDL), no vocational licence, expired road tax, no insurance and carrying dangerous and excessive loads.

"A total of 1,305 vehicles have been subject to action, with 33 of them seized, that is 20 goods vehicles weighing more than 7,500 kilogrammes (kg), four goods vehicles weighing less than 7,500kg, seven employee buses and two school buses,” he told reporters after the operation at the JPJ Kesang Enforcement Station here yesterday.

Zulkarnain said all the seized vehicles were found to have committed offences deemed risky or unsafe and are not fit to be on the road.

He added that the department found the awareness level regarding compliance with road safety regulations, especially among commercial vehicle drivers, was still low.

"Some even didn't have driving licences, failed to renew or did not have road tax and insurance coverage,” he said, adding that the police and the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) also assisted in the operation.

In conjunction with the Chinese New Year and Ramadan, Zulkarnain said it would also conduct operations similar to previous years to ensure smooth traffic flow and the safety of road users, especially in accident-prone areas.
