GEORGE TOWN, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- Lithuanian street artist Ernest Zacharevic has agreed to assist in the brush-up of his three most iconic murals in George Town, which are internationally recognised symbols of the vibrant street art scene and cultural heritage.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said that the restoration of the murals in Lebuh Armenian, Lebuh Ah Quee, and Lebuh Cannon will commence shortly and will receive support.
"Since Ernest began painting these murals in George Town as part of the George Town Festival in 2012, they have attracted global attention and drawn tourists from all over the world to witness these remarkable works of art," he said in a statement today.
"Murals like the famous 'Children on a Bicycle' in Lebuh Armenian are not only beloved landmarks but have also played a significant role in placing Penang on the world stage. This artwork has contributed to the recognition of the state as a hub for colonial heritage and contemporary street art."
He noted that over time, the murals have naturally faded and many residents and tourists have expressed concern about this.
Wong said that the state government has received numerous requests from the public to restore the murals and preserve them for future generations. As a result, it reached out to Zacharevic to discuss the matter before he agreed to undertake the restoration works.
He expressed the state government's highest appreciation to Zacharevic for his willingness to return and restore the murals, noting that his contribution has had a lasting impact on Penang.
"We believe that the restored murals will continue to inspire visitors from around the world, and we hope this restoration project will encourage more local and international artists to contribute to the artistic landscape of Penang," he said.
He also said that the state government has always been a supporter of the arts and culture while providing an environment where creative expression can flourish.
"It is in this supportive atmosphere that these extraordinary murals were created, and we remain committed to fostering a vibrant cultural and artistic community in Penang. We are excited to witness the revival of these artworks and ensure they continue to enrich the cultural landscape of George Town for years to come," he added.
