YAYASAN WAQAF MALAYSIA URGED TO MANAGE WAKAF ASSETS WITH GOOD GOVERNANCE

09/12/2024 06:48 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar has called on Yayasan Waqaf Malaysia (YWM) to manage wakaf assets with good governance to ensure they bring significant benefits to the development of the ummah.

Mohd Na’im, who is also chairman of YWM Board of Trustees, said efficient management of wakaf assets would enhance the community’s economy and strengthen institutions, ensuring no one is left behind in enjoying a better quality of life, regardless of race or religion.

At the same time, he said YWM should continue to innovate and produce impactful wakaf products, as it has done previously, including the Wakaf al-Muaqqat and Wakaf Masjid Hijau, which won the Prime Minister’s Department Innovation Award 2024 in October.

“I consistently remind YWM to explore various opportunities to elevate Malaysia’s wakaf institution to the international level. Strengthening collaborations with State Islamic Religious Councils must also continue,” he said.

He said this at the handing over of the Al-Falah MADANI scholarship under the myWaqafPTPTN initiative, organised by YWM in collaboration with the Department of Wakaf, Zakat and Haj (JAWHAR) and the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) here today.

As an initial step, 70 students from various public universities, comprising asnaf families verified by State Islamic Religious Councils, as well as B40 and M40 families, including non-Muslim recipients, have been selected to benefit from the scholarship.

Mohd Na’im said the scholarship symbolises YWM’s commitment to upholding wakaf values as a catalyst for educational advancement in Malaysia.

“It demonstrates that quality education should not be an exclusive privilege but an opportunity accessible to all. Through educational wakaf, its benefits can reach everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion,” he said.

He also encouraged individuals and companies to contribute zakat in the form of wakaf to help those in need for the collective good.

During the ceremony, Mohd Na’im also witnessed the signing of a letter of intent for collaboration between YWM and three parties, namely Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad, Andorra Healthcare, and Kolej Professional Baitulmal Kuala Lumpur.

The collaboration aims to finance high-impact wakaf projects, develop specialist hospital, and improve infrastructure and student welfare through the Go-Barakah platform.
