LABUAN, March 15 (Bernama) -- The RM11.6 million bridge project at Kampung Patau-Patau 1 is set to be completed nine months ahead of schedule, marking a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to enhance infrastructure on the island.
The four-kilometre bridge, which began construction in October 2023, is a crucial upgrade for the renowned water village, home to nearly 2,000 residents.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, particularly in areas requiring urgent attention.
“We must commend the dedication and commitment of the Public Works Department (JKR) in Labuan for ensuring not only steady progress but also an exceptional delivery time - nine months ahead of schedule,” she told Bernama after a project briefing in the village.
Dr Zaliha said the project considers both the safety of villagers and the preservation of the water village’s unique appeal as a tourism hotspot.
“As the government prioritises Labuan’s economic growth and the wellbeing of its people, infrastructure improvements will not be overlooked,” she said.
She added that the bridge’s early completion is a welcome development for residents and businesses, which would further strengthen Labuan’s infrastructure and tourism potential.
Meanwhile, Labuan JKR director Mohd Faizul Mohd Ali Hanapiah said the bridge is being built using ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), a cutting-edge construction material known for its durability and strength.
He said the project involves extensive repair work, including piling reinforcement, installation of 413 pile caps, 70 I-beams, and the replacement of a 4,000-metre cable tray. Additionally, a 1,000mm-high handrail will be installed for added safety.
“Although the overall physical work stands at 31 per cent, we have already achieved 80 per cent of the total project progress,” he said.
