TUNKU ZAIN AL-'ABIDIN APPOINTED AS UCSI UNIVERSITY'S SECOND CHANCELLOR

KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 (Bernama) -- USCI University has appointed Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin Tuanku Muhriz as its new Chancellor, the second of such appointment made in the institution’s 39-year history.

UCSI University, in a statement today, stated that Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin, who first joined UCSI in 2021 as its inaugural Pro-Chancellor, has played a pivotal role in advancing the university’s global footprint and student development initiatives.

The university said Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin, in his previous capacity, has contributed significantly to the development of UCSI’s Bangladesh branch campus and helped broaden the university’s international research collaborations through various overseas engagements.

Earlier this year, Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin was appointed Patron of UCSI Hospital and has also served as Advisor to the UCSI Group since 2023.

During the installation ceremony held at the university’s 38th convocation, UCSI University Council Chairman Datuk Peter Ng in his speech expressed his confidence in Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin’s leadership.

“I have no doubt that Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin will continue to inspire UCSI students, faculty and alumni to rise to greater heights. This applies not only in their academic and professional pursuits but also to their roles as changemakers and global citizens.

“In him, we have a Chancellor who reflects the university’s founding values of audacity, integrity, perseverance and excellence. And in him, we have a role model that students can look up to for decades to come," he was quoted as saying in the statement.

Also present at the ceremony were UCSI vice-chancellor and president Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir and UCSI Healthcare Group chairman Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

A prominent public intellectual and social advocate, Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin is the founding president of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), where he champions policy reform, good governance and inclusive development.

He is also a columnist, accomplished pianist and passionate advocate of Malaysia’s diverse heritage.

Beyond his roles at UCSI, Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin serves as a trustee of Yayasan Chow Kit, Yayasan Munarah, IDEAS and the Genovasi Foundation. He is also Chairman of Omesti Berhad and Director of Prima Gading Corporation.

His appointment is expected to further reinforce UCSI University’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation and societal impact.
