PPMM URGES ISRAEL’S VIOLATIONS BE TRIED AT ICC OR ICJ

02/10/2025 03:41 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Muslim Lawyers Association (PPMM) has called for Israel’s violations of international law to be brought before the International Criminal Court (ICC) or the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for trial.

PPMM, standing in solidarity with the humanitarian aid flotilla Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), strongly condemned the Israeli forces' actions against Malaysians in international waters.

In a statement today, PPMM said the flotilla, which carried a noble mission of delivering humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, was navigating through international waters, outside the maritime zone blockaded off Gaza.

“Despite this, Israeli forces acted aggressively by detaining and threatening Malaysians who were part of the mission.

“The latest detention and seizure of humanitarian volunteers and activists in international waters constitutes a clear violation of international law and is unacceptable,” it said.

According to PPMM, the act amounts to a war crime and a blatant breach of several international legal instruments.

“These include the Fourth Geneva Convention, which protects civilians during wartime; the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which guarantees freedom of navigation in international waters; and International Humanitarian Law (IHL), which sets out protections for humanitarian aid missions,” it said.

PPMM demanded the immediate release and safe return of detained Malaysians and urged all nations, particularly the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to condemn Israel’s actions and press the regime to comply with international law.

The association also called for firm and effective measures from the Malaysian government, leveraging all available channels and platforms, to secure the release of Malaysians unlawfully detained during the Sumud Flotilla mission.

As of 7.50 am today, 12 Malaysians participating in the humanitarian mission were reported detained by Israel as the GSF entered the red zone of Gaza waters.
