THOMSON FERTILITY EMBARKS ON IVA, NEW HOPE FOR WOMEN WITH OVARIAN INSUFFICIENCY, DOR

02/10/2025 09:40 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- Thomson Fertility has highlighted In Vitro Activation (IVA), an advanced fertility treatment offering renewed hope to women diagnosed with Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) and diminished ovarian reserves (DOR), conditions that significantly reduce fertility potential.

In a statement, Thomson Fertility sais IVA is an innovative approach designed to help women with limited ovarian function use their own eggs to achieve pregnancy, a breakthrough in reproductive medicine, particularly for patients who previously faced slim chances of conceiving.

It noted that research has shown the live birth rate for women with POI and DOR can potentially increase from around five percent to as high as 20 percent through the IVA procedure.

The IVA process involves key-hole surgery to remove a portion of ovarian tissue, followed by laboratory techniques to activate dormant follicles outside the body.

The rejuvenated tissue is then re-implanted into the ovarian bed, after which patients undergo hormone therapy to stimulate follicle growth, the fertility centre said.

Prof Dr S. Prasanna, Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Fertility Specialist, Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine and Minimally Invasive Gynaecological Surgeon at Thomson Fertility  described the  technology as a significant breakthrough and provides hope for women wishing to have children.

“For women living with POI or DOR, fertility struggles often feel like a closed door. IVA is a remarkable scientific step forward, creating the opportunity for them to use their own eggs in their journey to parenthood,” he said in the same statement.

To strengthen awareness and accessibility of IVA in Malaysia, Thomson Fertility has partnered with a leading global expert in IVA technology, Prof Dr Kazuhiro Kawamura of Juntendo University, Tokyo.

“IVA is the culmination of extensive research into ovarian tissue activation. Collaborations with centres such as Thomson Fertility in Malaysia ensure that more patients can access and benefit from cutting edge scientific research as they explore the possibilities in starting a family,” Kawamura said.

Meanwhile, Thomson Fertility chief executive officer Lakshmi Menon said the centre remains dedicated to celebrating life through innovation and compassion in reproductive medicine.

“By raising awareness of IVA, we aim to empower every woman who has been told that her chances are gone, with the knowledge about the options available to her . We are here to tell her: ‘there is still hope and a path forward to experiencing the joy of parenthood.’

“For Muslim women, with limited ovarian function to use their own eggs, IVA represents a particularly pivotal opportunity to start a family. More than 8,000 IVF babies born through its facility, Thomson Fertility continues to position itself at the forefront of fertility innovation in Malaysia and the wider region,” she said.

She also said the centre remains committed to driving innovation, patient education and compassionate care, ensuring women and couples are given every possible chance to realise their dream of building a family via IVA and partnerships with world-renowned experts,
