MTL: WORKS MINISTRY STRENGTHENS PREPAREDNESS - NANTA

04/11/2025 06:30 PM

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- The Works Ministry (KKR) is always prepared for disasters during the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) period, especially damage to road and bridge infrastructure nationwide.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the disaster operations room under the Public Works Department (JKR) was recently activated to monitor the current situation in near real-time across all states.

“Every time the MTL hits, significant infrastructure damage occurs, such as damaged roads, collapsed bridges and affected slopes. Therefore, we are always prepared with action plans and monitoring teams that operate 24 hours a day," he said at a press conference after officiating the JKR Greenday 2025 here today.

According to Nanta, preparations are also being carried out at the state and district levels in collaboration with various other government agencies, including the provision of additional assets such as temporary bridges (Bailey bridges) and support equipment for urgent repair work.

“Additionally, we have also increased the number of temporary bridges and other essential equipment to ensure that the route can be quickly restored in case of disruption," he said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) is preparing to face the MTL by implementing various measures to ensure smooth disaster management and to protect the welfare of victims.

It announced in a statement today that the measures taken include the provision of logistics and basic necessities such as food, clothing, mats, blankets, and baby equipment at all state disaster depots and stores, as well as the listing and monitoring of temporary relief centres (PPS) nationwide, which are in a state of preparedness.

It also said as the department responsible for coordinating the management of PPS and the welfare of disaster victims, it has also conducted preparedness training and disaster management simulations with rescue agencies and local authorities.

Additionally, other steps include coordinating welfare volunteers such as the SUKARELA volunteer team and the Skuad Prihatin to be deployed to affected locations to assist victims.

"JKM has introduced the JKM Disaster Information Application (MyIBJKM) initiative, which is the official digital platform developed to facilitate public access to various information online," according to the statement.

JKM said that through the application, disaster victims can register themselves before, during and after a disaster, as well as update personal and family information, find nearby PPS locations, and check in and out of PPS," said the statement issued here today.

At the same time, JKM reminds the public to always be vigilant about weather warnings and to comply with instructions from the authorities.
