PAHANG RESIDENTS ADVISED TO BE ON ALERT FOR KING TIDES

05/11/2025 02:24 PM

KUANTAN, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- Residents in Pahang have been advised to remain vigilant regarding the phenomenon of king tides, which are expected to occur between today and Dec 25.

Kuantan District Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) engineer Rohushsyifa Ahmad Radzi said sea levels are expected to rise in coastal areas such as Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin.

“Residents are advised to take precautionary measures, especially those living near rivers and low-lying areas, as these locations are at risk of flooding if king tides coincide with heavy rainfall during this Northeast Monsoon season,” she said.

She told reporters this after giving a briefing on the functions and awareness of telemetry stations and the flood warning and forecasting siren system at the Kampung Galing Surau here today, which was also attended by Semambu state assemblyman Chan Chun Kuang.

Rohushsyifa said that, based on data received, king tides are expected to occur from today until Nov 8, as well as on Nov 10 and 11, at night and in the early morning.

She said king tides are also forecast to occur at night and in the early morning from Dec 3 to 7, Dec 9 to 11, Dec 20 to 22, and Dec 24 and 25.

Meanwhile, she said the district has 57 flood-prone areas, with 19 siren stations currently being tested.

According to her, JPS had previously detected interference by animals at the siren stations.

“Therefore, the public is urged to immediately notify JPS if the sirens sound without reason, so that further action can be taken,” she said.

She said there are two types of main siren sounds: the warning siren when river water exceeds the warning level, with residents advised to prepare for evacuation, and the danger siren when river water exceeds the danger level, with residents required to evacuate immediately.
