OPS PERANG: KEDAH JPJ INSPECTS 13,902 COMMERCIAL VEHICLES, ISSUES 4,513 SUMMONSES

BALING, Dec 22 (Bernama) -- The Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued 4,513 summonses after inspecting 13,902 commercial vehicles under the northern zone Ops Perang since October.

Kedah JPJ director Stien Van Lutam said the integrated operation, which runs until Dec 31, aims to curb non-compliance with road laws, particularly overloading offences involving commercial vehicles.

He said the operation is a declaration of war against irresponsible operators and drivers who continue to flout regulations, endangering road users and damaging public infrastructure.

“The operation involves Kedah, Penang and Perlis and was carried out in phases, namely in Penang from Nov 17 to 23, Kedah from Nov 24 to 30, and as an integrated northern zone operation from Dec 19 to 21,” he told a press conference here today.

Van Lutam said 60 enforcement officers were deployed in each phase, involving mobile patrols and static operations at strategic locations, including logistics routes and high-risk areas for overloading.

Of the summonses issued, 45 were for overloading, including three cases exceeding 50 per cent of the permitted limit.

Such cases will be prosecuted under Section 80 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010, which provides for heavy penalties, including vehicle forfeiture and action against licences, permits and vehicle owners.

“So far, three vehicles have been forfeited during the operation -- one in Penang and two in Kedah. Overall, six vehicles have been forfeited in Kedah from June to December this year,” he said.

Van Lutam urged commercial vehicle drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to comply with traffic regulations.

Meanwhile, he said, summons collections in Kedah from the start of the year to date totalled RM23,399,865, with RM20,049,665 collected through compounds and RM3,350,200 via court proceedings.
