MELAKA STRENGTHENS GREEN ENERGY AGENDA, IMPLEMENTS SOLAR PROJECT ON UTC PARKING ROOF

29/12/2025 08:30 PM

MELAKA, Dec 29 (Bernama) -- The Melaka state government continues to intensify efforts to empower the climate change and energy sustainability agenda by implementing a solar panel installation project on the roof of the Melaka Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) parking lot.

State Senior Executive Councillor for Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Datuk Rais Yasi said the move was strategic to maximise the use of existing space for renewable energy generation and electricity savings.

“This effort is also a continuation of the previous installation of the solar panel on the roof of the Melaka UTC, with a more progressive approach when the roof of the parking lot is also utilised.

"This initiative is believed to be able to be a catalyst for the wider use of green technology, especially in government buildings in this state," he told reporters here today.

Previously, he witnessed the signing ceremony for the joint venture document involving Taha Cahaya Sdn Bhd, Melaka Trust Fund Board (LTAM), and Melaka Green Technology Corporation (PTHM) for the Melaka UTC Building Solar Integrated Carpark Project.

Elaborating further, Rais said the project's implementation also makes it the first of its kind involving the state government's parking lot roof.

He said the state government also gave PTHM an exclusive role in implementing and coordinating all green technology initiatives involving state government assets and buildings, including strategic cooperation with private industry players.

He said that so far, PTHM, in collaboration with industry partners, has installed 114 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in parking areas, in addition to expanding solar energy initiatives in the housing sector through cooperation with private companies, including the Melaka Housing Solar Scheme (SolarMEL).

Rais said the state government would continue to encourage the exploration of potential spaces in government buildings for green energy purposes but implementation was subject to set standards and conditions, in addition to several high-impact projects being planned for implementation next year.

“We have set realistic and phased targets. With the cooperation of strategic partners, this initiative is believed to be able to strengthen Melaka’s position as one of the leading states in green technology,” he also said.
