PENANG SETS ZAKAT FITRAH RATES AT RM10, RM15 AND RM25

03/02/2026 03:30 PM

KEPALA BATAS, Feb 3 Bernama) -- The Penang Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP) has set the 1447H/2026M zakat fitrah rates at three categories, namely RM10, RM15 and RM25 for this year.

MAINPP president Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid said the three rates for the state were introduced based on the type of rice consumed and the individual’s financial ability.

“The three rates provide an opportunity for Muslims in Penang who are more financially capable to fulfil their zakat fitrah obligation according to the staple food of the people, which is white rice.

“As such, the compulsory zakat fitrah rate in the state is RM10 for imported white rice, Thai white rice or its equivalent, RM15 for parboiled rice, brown rice or its equivalent, and RM25 for fragrant rice, glutinous rice, ponni rice, Calrose rice, basmati rice or its equivalent,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after the Zakat Fitrah ‘Amil’ (zakat collectors) Accreditation Ceremony and the State Government’s Ihya Ramadan Contribution Programme for 1447H/2026M here today, which was also attended by Zakat MAINPP chief executive officer Mohamad Kairi Ghazali.

Mohamad, who is also Deputy Chief Minister I, said MAINPP had appointed 1,686 zakat fitrah ‘amils’ involving 239 collection centres statewide.

He said zakat fitrah collection last year amounted to RM8.8 million, exceeding the initial target of RM7.9 million.

“I believe one of the factors behind the increase was the dedication of the appointed collectors in carrying out their duties, which led to a rise in both collections and contributors,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohamad said the state government has also allocated RM265,000 to mosques and surau to enliven Ramadan this year, while Zakat MAINPP had allocated RM1 million to all mosques through the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAIPP) for tarawih prayers.

“This contribution is not merely financial assistance, but also a sign of the state government’s concern in making mosques and surau centres of unity for the ummah,” he said.
