BERNAMA INFOGRAPHICS HELP PUBLIC UNDERSTAND COMPLEX ISSUES - HANNAH

KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 (Bernama) -- Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh has praised the role of the Malaysian National News Agency’s (Bernama) infographics in helping the public understand complex and serious issues.

She said that in an era of social media dominated by short videos and audiences less inclined to read lengthy reports, the work of the infographic team is particularly crucial.

“I really like Bernama’s infographics because they consistently make it easier for the public to grasp the real issues. Everything moves so fast now, and no one wants to read long reports,” she said at the Nur Ramadan programme with the media here today.

Also present were Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud, Federal Territories Department director-general Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain, and Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.

Hannah said the media’s ability to translate serious issues into simple visual forms helps ensure that government messages reach the public more effectively.

Meanwhile, Hannah stressed that in a mature democracy, the relationship between the government and the media does not always have to be ‘comfortable’.

She said questioning policies and criticising government reports is a healthy part of the system of checks and balances.

“A good government does not fear questions, and a good media does not stop asking. The role of media partners is crucial, not only in delivering news but also in helping the public understand what is happening around them,” she said.

Hannah also highlighted various initiatives underway to strengthen urban community welfare in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan, but acknowledged that good policies are meaningless if the public does not understand or directly feel their impact.

She therefore called on ministry officers, including those at Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the Federal Territories Department, to be more open in communicating with the media to highlight government initiatives.
