NEW BUS LANES, 'PARK-AND-RIDE' TO REDUCE TRAFFIC CONGESTION IN SARAWAK

KUCHING, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is advancing the expansion of its public transport network with dedicated bus lanes, enhanced bus signal priority systems, and innovative solutions like the park-and-ride concept.

Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the park-and-ride model, which allows commuters to park at designated peripheral locations and take a bus into the city centre, is viewed as a promising way to reduce vehicle congestion in urban areas.

“We are also exploring more sustainable mobility options, such as cycling and walking. However, this will require adjustments in our urban planning and infrastructure, including more covered walkways and safer, accessible cycling routes,” he said in a statement today.

He said Sarawak is currently testing new technology to implement bus signal priority systems, which allow buses to receive green light priority at traffic junctions, thus reducing delays and improving schedule adherence.

“Addressing urban traffic challenges requires a holistic approach that involves local authorities, transportation providers, and the public. We all have a role to play in improving urban traffic in Sarawak. Our goal is to create a safe, reliable, efficient, and environmentally sustainable transport system,” he added.

Meanwhile, Lee said that 56 new buses are set to arrive in Kuching early next year, which will further modernise the city’s public transport fleet.

He added that in Miri, the Smart Buses initiative is replacing older vehicles with modern Volvo models, alongside a zero-fare smart bus system aimed at transforming public transport access.

“This initiative has greatly boosted ridership, even fostering family outings as parents bring their children on public buses during weekends instead of driving,” he said.
