GAZA'S LIVING CONDITIONS DEVASTATED BY REPEATED ATTACKS AND BLOCKADE: REPORT

20/12/2024 01:38 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 19 (Bernama) -- Repeated attacks, a suffocating siege, and a relentless blockade over the past 14 months are devastating the living conditions in Gaza, according to a new report by Doctors Without Borders.

In the report, "Gaza: Life in a Death Trap", the international medical humanitarian organisation is urgently calling on all parties for an immediate ceasefire to save lives and enable the flow of humanitarian aid.

Israel must stop its targeted and indiscriminate attacks against civilians, and its allies must act without delay to protect the lives of Palestinians and uphold the rules of war, the report stated.

Doctors Without Borders’ secretary-general, Christopher Lockyear, said people in Gaza are struggling to survive apocalyptic conditions; however “nowhere is safe, no one is spared, and there is no exit from this shattered enclave”.

Lockyear,  who visited Gaza earlier this year, said the recent military offensive in the north is a stark illustration of the brutal war the Israeli forces are waging on Gaza.

“We are seeing clear signs of ethnic cleansing as Palestinians are forcibly displaced, trapped, and bombed.

"What our medical teams have witnessed on the ground throughout this conflict is consistent with the descriptions provided by an increasing number of legal experts and organisations concluding that genocide is taking place in Gaza.

“While we don't have legal authority to establish intentionality, the signs of ethnic cleansing and the ongoing devastation – including mass killings, severe physical and mental health injuries, forced displacement, and impossible conditions of life for Palestinians under siege and bombardment – are undeniable,” he added.

To date, more than 45,000 Palestinians have been killed in the war in Gaza, including eight members of Doctors Without Borders, according to the Health Ministry.

The United Nations earlier this year estimated that over 10,000 bodies remain buried under the rubble.

Meanwhile, Doctors Without Borders said even if the Israeli military offensive on Gaza were to end today, its long-term impacts would remain unprecedented due to the sheer scale of destruction and the extraordinary challenges in delivering healthcare across the Strip.

“A staggering number of war-wounded individuals face risks of infection, amputation, and permanent disability, with many requiring years of rehabilitative care.

“The cumulative physical toll and mental trauma – driven by extreme violence, the loss of family members and homes, repeated forced displacement, and inhumane living conditions – will leave scars that endure for generations,” it added.
