MELAKA, March 23 (Bernama) -- The management entrusted with running four wakaf hotels under Perbadanan Wakaf Nasional Berhad (PWNB) has been reminded to maintain the hotels’ image with care.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said it was to avoid any misconceptions about the management of wakaf in this country.
“The public understands wakaf involves the building of a mosque on wakaf land along with a cemetery, so today we want to show that the Islamic model can also be used as a foundation to create wakaf for interests as the revenue from the wakaf hotels can be channelled to those in need.
"We want to show how the concept of wakaf is an important instrument in the development of Islamic economy,” he told reporters at an Iftar event with orphans in conjunction with National Wakaf Month here tonight.
Melaka Education, Higher Education and Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Rahmad Mariman, Wakaf Zakat and Haji (Jawhar) Department director-general Datuk Selamat Paigo and Yayasan Waqaf Malaysia (YWM) chief executive officer Dr Ridzwan Bakar also attended the event.
Mohd Na'im said PWNB had four wakaf hotels in Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Perak currently.
He also shared that zakat collections had risen in each state, which showed public awareness and trust had strengthened as a result of transparent administration by agencies responsible for zakat collection.
