SUNGAI BULOH, April 23 (Bernama) -- Swift-rising water following continuous heavy rain since early today caught villagers in Kampung Kubu Gajah here off guard, as many were still asleep when their homes were inundated.
One of the flash flood victims, Sofiah Husain, 44, said the water rose so fast and she could not save anything.
At the time of the incident, Sofiah said she and her seven children were asleep and only realised their home was flooded when she woke up to use the bathroom at 6 am.
“As I was walking to the bathroom, I saw water pooled up to my ankles. When I opened the door, water rushed in rapidly into the house.
“I didn’t have time to save anything because I was busy waking up the children so we could escape. The water rose so fast, it reached chest level,” she said when met at a relief centre at Dewan Seri Pagi Paya Jaras here.
Sofiah said she hoped the deepening works of Sungai Kedondong nearby could be completed soon to help resolve the flooding issue in the village.
Another victim, Rojiah Ackhirman, 31, said she only realised her house at Jalan Gajah 15 was flooded after being awakened by her neighbour.
“When my neighbour woke me up, the water was only ankle-deep, so I quickly secured important items and placed them somewhere high before heading to the relief centre with my children,” she said.
It is understood that around 100 families in Kampung Kubu Gajah were affected by the flash flood.
This morning, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department reported that several districts in Selangor including Sungai Buloh, Petaling Jaya, and Subang Jaya were hit by flash floods due to the prolonged early morning downpour.
