FLOODS: NUMBER OF EVACUEES CONTINUES TO RISE IN FOUR STATES

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- The number of flood evacuees in Terengganu, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang continued to rise this afternoon, while Perak, Kedah, Perlis and Kelantan recorded a decline in the number of victims.

In TERENGGANU, the number of evacuees increased to 6,335 people from 1,913 families this afternoon, compared to 5,009 people from 1,488 families at noon.

A total of 96 temporary relief centres have been opened across eight affected districts, namely Kemaman, Marang, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Dungun, Kuala Terengganu, Hulu Terengganu and Besut.

According to the MyPublic Infobanjir application, water levels in 11 rivers across Terengganu have exceeded the danger mark, including Sungai Dungun in Kuala Jengai, Dungun; Sungai Marang at the Pengkalan Berangan Bridge in Marang; Sungai Chalok at the Chalok Bridge in Setiu; Sungai Telemong at Kuala Ping (F1) in Hulu Terengganu; and Sungai Besut at the Keruak Bridge (F2) in Besut.

In SELANGOR, a total of 3,125 people from 838 families were taking shelter this afternoon, up from 2,904 people from 770 families at noon. They are currently accommodated at 21 relief centres across five districts - Klang, Kuala Selangor, Sabak Bernam, Sepang and Kuala Langat.

Meanwhile, in NEGERI SEMBILAN, the number of evacuees rose to 156 people from 47 families this afternoon, compared to 117 people from 30 families reported at noon. They are being housed at four relief centres: Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Jimah Lama in Lukut; Permatang Pasir Community Hall in Linggi, Port Dickson; SK Jijan in Labu, Seremban; and SK Undang Johol in Kuala Pilah.

In PAHANG, the number of flood evacuees increased to 1,066 people from 333 families this afternoon, up from 952 people from 301 families reported at noon.

According to the Social Welfare Department’s (JKM) InfoBencana portal, Kuantan recorded 401 evacuees from 127 families placed in eight relief centres, while 289 people (82 families) were housed in six centres in Maran. In Raub, 253 evacuees (84 families) were relocated to 11 centres, and 123 people (40 families) were taking shelter at seven relief centres in Lipis.

Infopublic Banjir reported that three rivers have exceeded the danger level: Sungai Luit in Kampung Subuh, Maran, which recorded 28.44 metres (m); Sungai Pahang in Kuala Tembeling, Bentong (99.72 m); and Sungai Kuantan in Bukit Kenau (21.77 m).

Meanwhile, in PERAK, the number of evacuees dropped this afternoon to 5,503 people from 1,663 families, compared to 5,844 people from 1,766 families recorded at noon. They continue to take shelter at 46 relief centres across Manjung, Hilir Perak, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk, Larut, Matang and Selama, as well as Muallim.

The Perak Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) Secretariat said Manjung district continued to record the highest number of evacuees, with 2,273 people from 689 families still housed at 18 relief centres.

In KEDAH, the number of flood evacuees dropped to 4,280 people from 1,367 families this afternoon, down from 4,486 people from 1,443 families reported at noon. They remain housed at 21 relief centres across the three affected districts - Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar and Pokok Sena.

According to the Kedah JPBN, Kubang Pasu continues to record the highest number of evacuees, with 2,286 people from 771 families taking shelter at 13 centres, followed by Kota Setar with 1,934 people (577 families) at six centres, while 60 people (19 families) are placed in two centres in Pokok Sena.

Infopublic Banjir reported that four rivers in Kedah have exceeded the danger level: Sungai Anak Bukit at 3.15 m, Sungai Padang Terap in Kepala Batas at 3.82 m, Sungai Bata at 10.863 m, and Sungai Baru at 2.074 m.

In PERLIS, the number of evacuees also continued to decline, dropping to 7,345 people this afternoon from 7,526 people at noon. They remain sheltered at 24 relief centres across the districts of Padang Besar, Kangar and Arau.

Also recording a decline in evacuee numbers is KELANTAN, where 3,484 people from 1,259 families were taking shelter this afternoon, compared to 4,767 people recorded at noon. They are currently housed at 30 relief centres across eight affected districts: Kota Bharu, Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Machang, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang.

Meanwhile, several major rivers in the state recorded a significant rise in water levels this afternoon, with some exceeding the danger level. This has heightened the risk of overflow, particularly in low-lying areas across Kelantan.

According to the Kelantan Civil Defence Force Secretariat, the water level at Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang rose to 10.84 m, surpassing the danger level of 9 m. Several stations along Sungai Kelantan also recorded alarming readings, with Kuala Krai at 22.45 m, just below the warning level of 22.50 m, while Tualang registered 30.15 m, edging closer to the danger level of 34 m.

Meanwhile, MELAKA has also been affected by flooding, with four relief centres opened in the Alor Gajah district today.

According to a statement from the Melaka JPBN Secretariat, a relief centre at SK Masjid Tanah was opened at 12 noon, housing 20 evacuees from four families.

Three other relief centres are the Melaka Islamic Religious Department’s (JAIM) Sekolah Rendah Agama (SRA) Jelatang Masjid Ar Rashidin, opened at 2 pm, Dewan Japerun Ayer Limau (2.45 pm) and SK Ayer Jernih (3.30 pm), currently still in the process of registering evacuees.

“The number of relief centres opened in flood-affected areas in the Alor Gajah district continues to rise, and to date 13 locations have been reported inundated following heavy rainfall,” it said.

The locations affected by the floods include Taman Masjid Tanah Ria, Masjid Tanah town, Ramuan China Besar, Kampung Paya Lebar, Kampung Ayer Molek Kuala Linggi, Taman Seri Bayu 2, Bukit Balai, Kampung Gadek, Kampung Jeram, Pengkalan Balak, Kampung Belimbing Dalam, Kampung Keramat Leban and Kampung Ayer Molek.
