GENEVA, March 22 (Bernama-dpa) -- At least 64 people have been killed in an attack on a healthcare facility in Sudan, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Saturday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the Al Deain Teaching Hospital in East Darfur’s capital was struck on Friday night.
The attack also injured 89 people and had damaged the hospital's paediatric, maternity and emergency departments, Tedros said.
He said the total number of fatalities linked to attacks on health facilities during Sudan’s war had now surpassed 2,000.
"Enough blood has been spilled. Enough suffering has been inflicted. The time has come to de-escalate the conflict in Sudan and ensure the protection of civilians, health workers, and humanitarians," Tedros said.
"Health care should never be a target. Peace is the best medicine."
Sudanese rights group the Emergency Lawyers reported it was an army drone strike that hit the hospital.
Sudan has been gripped by war since April 2023, with fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
The United Nations has described the conflict as the world's largest humanitarian crisis. Around 12 million people have been displaced and half the population faces hunger.
