KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 (Bernama) -- Alam Flora Sdn Bhd (Alam Flora) has recorded a decline in domestic solid waste collection over the first 20 days of Ramadan this year compared to the same period last year.
Alam Flora chief executive officer Shariman Yusuf Mohamed Zain said the amount of waste collected in Kuala Lumpur dropped by nearly 23 per cent to 29,300 tonnes this year, compared to 38,000 tonnes in 2024.
He said in Pahang, waste collection decreased by 6.43 per cent to 13,100 tonnes compared to 14,000 tonnes last year, while in Putrajaya, the collection remained the same at 2,000 tonnes.
“The decrease in domestic waste volume in Kuala Lumpur is largely attributed to the reduction in the number of Ramadan bazaars, from 112 locations in 2024 to just 66 this year.
“This reduction has a direct impact on the amount of waste generated, as the number of visitors and business activities at the bazaars also decreased, leading to lower waste production,” he said in a statement today.
At the same time, Shariman assured that waste collection and public cleaning services in Kuala Lumpur, Kuantan and Putrajaya will continue as usual throughout the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration next week.
He added that cooperation from all parties in separating food waste and recyclable materials according to the guidelines of the waste separation-at-source programme introduced by the government is crucial in maintaining cleanliness in their respective areas.
