JAKARTA, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has been invited to take part in the Gaza Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on Monday, said State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi.
He said the invitation came rather suddenly, but Prabowo decided to accept it to maintain good relations and as part of Indonesia’s continued efforts to promote peace in the Middle East.
“The President said this could be a continuation of negotiations that, Insya-Allah, might bring peace to Palestine, especially in Gaza,” he said in a statement after a meeting at Prabowo’s private residence here on Sunday night.
While details of the talks remain unclear, Prasetyo said Jakarta was prepared to play a greater role if progress was achieved, including the possible deployment of 20,000 peacekeeping troops, a proposal Prabowo raised during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly last month.
The Vice Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces General Tandyo Budi Revita attended Sunday’s meeting and was instructed to begin early preparations should the need arise, he added.
International media reported that the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit will be convened as a follow-up to the first phase of the Gaza Peace Plan, aimed at ending the war in Gaza, Palestine.
The meeting will be co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and United States President Donald Trump, with leaders from more than 20 countries in attendance.
