TUMPAT, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- A 46-year-old local man is believed to have been fatally slashed by his cousin in an incident at Kampung Kok Bedullah here yesterday.
The victim, identified as Mohd Shuhairi Hashim, 46, was confirmed dead at the scene.
Kelantan Police Chief, Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat, when contacted by Bernama today, confirmed that police have detained the suspect involved and the case investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
“The urine screening test conducted on the suspect was confirmed positive for drugs and possession," he said, adding that further details regarding the case would be released in an official statement.
Meanwhile, the victim's mother, Wan Salma Wan Said, 68, said she found her son covered in a pool of blood near their house, stating that at the time of the incident, she was upstairs in the house and preparing to sleep.
"At that time, I heard someone groaning in pain. I immediately opened the house window and saw my son lying down and groaning in pain in a horrifying state.
"Next to him, I saw my nephew (the suspect) shouting. I am not sure what happened, but I believe there might have been a misunderstanding between them that led to this tragic incident," she said at the Tumpat Hospital Forensics Unit today.
Wan Salma said the suspect had earlier told her that the victim did something hurtful and personal, but did not elaborate further before leaving for his house.
"After that, I immediately contacted my other child before making a police report," she said.
She said that at the time of the incident, the victim was believed to be washing an excavator alone before the suspect approached him and then attacked him with an unknown sharp object.
Following the incident, Tumpat District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Khairi Shafie said old grudges stemming from a land inheritance dispute and the circulation of a video of the suspect's child in a compromising situation are believed to be the motive for a man being slashed to death in an incident in Kampung Kok Bedullah, Tumpat.
He said that in the incident at 11:20 pm, the 46-year-old victim was found lying in front of his house covered in a pool of blood and was confirmed dead at the scene.
"Initial investigation results found that the victim suffered severe injuries to the head and right leg, while his left hand was severed, believed to be due to being hacked with a long machete," he said in a statement today.
Subsequently, police confiscated a long machete suspected to have been used in the attack.
The public who have information regarding the incident are urged to contact the Investigating Officer DSP Dean Jonathan Jalin at 09-7257222 or any nearby police station.
