BANGKOK, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- The Thai government has declared a one-year mourning period for all civil servants, state enterprise employees, and government officials to honour the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Airin Phanrit said all government offices, state enterprises, public agencies, and educational institutions are to fly the national flag at half-mast for 30 days beginning Oct 25, 2025.

"All civil servants, state enterprise employees, and government officials are to observe a one-year mourning period from Oct 25, 2025, onwards.

“The general public is invited to observe mourning in an appropriate and respectful manner," Airin said in a statement following a special Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Saturday.

Airin added that entertainment and service establishments across the country have been requested to suspend or scale down entertainment activities for 30 days as a mark of respect.

She said the Cabinet had also outlined several key measures to ensure the royal funeral ceremonies for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, are conducted with the utmost honour and in accordance with royal tradition.

Airin said the public will be allowed to pay their respects before Her Majesty's portrait on Sunday, Oct 26, from 8 am to 12 pm at the Sahathai Samakhom Pavilion within the Grand Palace.

"The Office of the Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister will form the Royal Funeral Committee, chaired by the Prime Minister, with subcommittees to oversee ceremonial operations, the construction of the royal crematorium, security arrangements, and public communications," she said.

Earlier, the Bureau of the Royal Household announced that Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, 93, passed away on Friday evening.

His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn has instructed the Bureau to organise Her Majesty's royal funeral with the highest honours in accordance with royal tradition.

The royal procession of the Queen Mother's remains to the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall within the Grand Palace is expected to take place at 4 pm (Thai time) on Sunday.
